Chops for Singers
“Chops” means music theory. Studying vocal musicianship is foundational for anyone serious about vocal improvisation. We will study rhythm, melody and harmony through the voice, ear and body. We’ll grow as vocal musicians and be able to do more and more awesome things with vocal improvisation as a result of it.
This is an intermediate-advanced, Level 3-4 course.
Briony is a passionate pioneer of aural musicianship pedagogy. She’s been a music teacher for 15 years - 5 years as a piano children, and 10 years teaching adults. Briony taught the year-long course Wild Voice, Solid Roots from 2018 - 2025, and has put her expertise into courses on the Your Song library.
Students find these approaches deeply empowering, musically and creatively. Keen improvisers feel sorrow they didn’t come across these methods in childhood. From hobbying singer songwriters and improvisers, to professional musicians, folks who get their teeth into these methods find uplifting, sometimes epiphanous, musical empowerment.
