Collaborative Vocal Improvisation: A Weekly Singing Practice in Totnes & Buckfastleigh

What if you could experience the joy of singing with others AND have creative freedom?

Most singing happens in one of two ways: you join a choir and sing beautiful harmonies but follow someone else’s repertoire, or you write your own songs and express yourself fully, but often alone.

Collaborative Vocal Improvisation (CVI) offers a third way - the communal beauty of singing together with the creative freedom to express yourself in the moment.

I’m Briony Greenhill - The Guardian called me “one of the world’s leading proponents of Collaborative Vocal Improvisation (CVI)” and I’ve had the honour of being Charlotte Church’s favorite singing teacher.

After years of teaching intensive week-long and year-long courses, and being an international teaching artist, I’ve rooted as a mama in Buckfastleigh and I’m bringing this practice home to my local community through accessible weekly drop-in sessions.

What happens in these sessions?

Each week we’ll explore vocal improvisation together through practices that vary between:

∙ Self-expression - finding and freeing your authentic voice

∙ Embodiment - warming up the body and voice through movement and breath

∙ Deep listening - the foundation of all collaborative improvisation

∙ Music theory - simple concepts that unlock creative possibilities

∙ Sound and healing - exploring the therapeutic power of voice

∙ Singing for change - voice as a tool for personal and collective transformation

It’s for folks who can sing in tune, keep a beat, and want an adventure. No experience needed. No ability to read music required. Just bring your curiosity and your voice.

∙ Totnes: Mondays, 12:30-1:30pm at The Civic Hall

∙ Buckfastleigh: Tuesdays, 12:30-1:30pm at the Moor Imagination Center

∙ Please arrive at 12.25 for a prompt start and a good use of the hour. Doors close at 12.40.

∙ £10 drop-in or £50 for a 6 week block.

∙ For drop in, pay on the door cash / bank transfer

∙ First sessions: Monday 23rd February (Totnes) / Tuesday 3 March (Buckfastleigh)
