Singing can help us heal. It can help us to regulate our nervous systems; bring joy and community into our lives. It can bring our inner lives, and indeed our shadows - parts of us we don’t know yet - into our conscious awareness. It can provide a beautiful river of companionship to accompany our healing journey. Singing is ancient, core to our humanity, and profound.
Over the past 15 years of praciticing and teaching the artform of CVI - Collaborative Vocal Improvisation - I have witnessed first hand how powerful singing can be for healing, in myself and my students. Thus I am in the process of writing a book about the healing power of improvised singing.
This workshop focuses on these themes.
We meet Tues, Wed Thursday 4.30 - 8.30pm. We arrive at 4.15 for a prompt 4.30 start, and take a 40 min dinner break about 6pm or so: please BYO dinner.
Within a container of kindness and confidentiality, we will delve into several healing forms, using vocal improvisation alone and collaboratively in small groups and the whole group, to express ourselves, nurture and soothe ourselves, to meet and digest some of the pain stored in our bodies, to carry that pain on a beautiful river of song; to meet and honour some of our wholeness, our Souls, and to rest. Within a container of pluaralism and welcome, we will use our singing voices to pray, in our own ways.
Led by myself, Briony Greenhill, a teaching artist, dual citizen UK-US. I’ve been teaching CVI internationally since 2013 and The Guardian calls me “one of the world’s leading proponents of Collaborative Vocal Improvisation - CVI.”
I have also been on a deep healing journey for over 17 years, and am a qualified Somasource Practitioner.
SomaSource LifeCycle Practitioners are psycho-spiritual educators, artists, activists, and healers who have an integrated understanding of how to creatively work in developmentally attuned ways with diverse people throughout life’s cycles. They are initiated adults who embody what they teach, offering transformative learning opportunities, through the arts of body, heart, and soul, for people in different stages of human development. Each practitioner is adept at tracking the relationship between the body and the Spirit, creating culturally sensitive experiences that inspire individuals to feel at home within themselves along with feeling a part of the Cosmos, the Mystical.
I am the co-founder of Heard.School, a program bringing vocal improvisation and therapeutic literacy into British Primary School teacher training; and I co-teach workshops on Relational Repair and Love at Home with my husband, eco therapist Oliver Bettany.
This is a workshop for singers, improvisers, therapists, and anyone interested in singing and healing. It’s for folks who can sing in tune, keep a beat, and want a gentle and deep adventure.
