A flexible vocal improvisation camp for families of all ages who really love to sing.
Vocal improvisation is a fun, freeing, challenging, creative approach to singing pioneered by the likes of Bobby McFerrin. It’s for confident singers eager to explore, express and be challenged.
Often, parents and children love to sing. Sometimes mamas come to class with babes strapped to their bodies. Sometimes young teens hang tentatively by the edge of the circle, then jump in and sing their heads off. Sometimes my very young nieces and god children sit on my shoulders and improvise more easily than most adults I teach. So, let’s create a space where all ages and family members can potentially sing together.
Dear families, I suppose that what you need is flexibility. So here is the offer.
There’ll be a set schedule. Each of you can come, or not, to what you want. There’s a nice river with good swimming spots, nice walks, a maze, a chapel, an organic farm shop, on the edge of the Brecon Beacons.
You can have a family room, or a couple of family rooms, or you can camp.
Three meals a day will be provided plus some healthy snacks; there will be a washing up rota for adults.
Children too young to walk are welcome to join sessions (and I ask you to take them out if they cry); as are children who are old enough to join in as singers. I’m guessing that that’s from about 6 up to 16, 17, 18….
In between, “toddlers” are not such great session participants and depending on numbers I will hire 1-2 singing nature connection childcare folks to help look after the toddlers.
I’ve never done this before so it will be in a spirit of flexibility and learning as we go.

Here’s the thing. Some families love to sing. So wouldn’t it be great to allow everyone a chance to sing, and for you to learn fun forms for improvising together that you can take back to your home, school or choir. I’m up for having a go if you are. I was a piano and voice teacher to children aged 4 – 18 for 4 years full time, so I have a pretty good gauge on kiddo music teaching and learning. Here are some of them:
Price, pending: likely to be in the vicinty of £500 per adult and £250 per child, less if camping; including all accommodation, childcare assistance, teaching, food and firewood. Bring your own towel and sunscreen!
