Grief Ritual

  • Harbertonford Village Hall Devon UK (map)

Life creates grief. It needs to be released, or we can find ourselves living weighed down by it. A culture without grief rituals, the Dagara culture of Burkina Faso perceives, is like a home without a toilet.

Once grief is released, the heart can replenish once more with joy and love. This needs to happen with some regularity. “We can’t emote, so we sedate” - writes Malidoma Somé in The Healing Wisdom of Africa.

This is an invitation to put the sedation down; to come together and emote, within a container that skilfully holds our sadness, tears, anger, rage, exhaustion, tenderness and love.

Briony Greenhill apprenticed to Sobonfu Somé 2012-2015 and has led grief rituals since Sobonfu's death in 2015, in the U.S. and now the UK. Alana Bloom apprenticed to Azul Thomé, and John Scaife apprenticed to Malidoma and Sobonfu Somé, and Martine Prechtel.
